GEO vs AEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?
SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of search results. AEO optimizes a page to be extracted and cited inside a single AI-generated answer. GEO is the broader practice of building brand authority and topical presence across the whole AI search ecosystem, of which AEO is the page-level part. The three overlap more than they conflict, but they are not the same discipline.

The Three Terms Get Used Interchangeably, and That Causes Real Confusion
Vendors use whichever term is trending that month, which makes it hard to know what you are actually buying. The distinction matters because it changes what work gets prioritized: a page that ranks well in Google can still be invisible in ChatGPT, and a brand with strong AI citations can still have weak organic traffic. Treating all three as one thing means optimizing for the wrong outcome.
SEO is measured in rankings and organic clicks. It rewards technical health, backlinks and topical depth built up over months or years.
AEO is measured in citations and mentions inside a specific generated answer. It rewards structure, direct answers, and schema that a model can parse without ambiguity.
GEO is measured in overall visibility and share of voice across AI platforms. It rewards brand consistency, third-party mentions, and being the kind of source models are trained to trust, not just the kind they can extract from.
How We Sequence the Work
SEO Foundation First
A page with no organic ranking rarely earns an AI citation either, since most engines lean on existing search signals. We check technical SEO and topical coverage before touching anything AEO-specific.
AEO Structure Second
Once the foundation is sound, we restructure the page itself: answer-first paragraphs, accurate schema, and a consistent entity so the specific page is easy to extract from.
GEO Presence Third
In parallel, we work on the signals outside the page: getting mentioned in the roundups and directories these engines already trust, and keeping the brand description consistent everywhere it appears.
Measure What Each Layer Actually Moves
Rankings, citation appearances, and AI referral traffic are tracked separately, because a change to one layer does not always move the others. Reporting them as one number hides which part of the work is actually paying off.

Common Questions
Which one should a small team prioritize first?
Almost always SEO, unless you already have a strong organic base. AEO and GEO both lean on existing search signals and existing brand presence. Without that foundation, there is little for either discipline to amplify.
Do these three need separate tools to track?
Largely yes today. SEO has mature tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Google Search Console. AEO and GEO tracking is younger and less standardized. Some newer platforms track brand mentions and citations across AI engines directly, but coverage and accuracy still vary a lot between them.
Is GEO just a rebrand of AEO?
Not quite, though the line is genuinely blurry and different agencies draw it differently. The most common distinction: AEO is page-level and answer-specific, GEO is brand-level and platform-wide. Many teams, including ours, run them as one combined workstream in practice because the underlying tactics overlap so much.
Does investing in AEO or GEO hurt traditional SEO?
No. The two are complementary rather than competing. Answer-first structure and accurate schema tend to help SEO rankings too, since they are also signals search engines use to understand a page. There is no tradeoff where gaining one costs you the other.
