What Is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude can extract it cleanly and cite it inside a generated answer. It is the SEO discipline for a search result that is a paragraph written by a model instead of a list of blue links.

The Gap

Ranking and Getting Cited Are Not the Same Skill Anymore

A page can rank on page one of Google and still never get pulled into an AI answer, because the two systems read content differently. A search engine ranks a URL. An answer engine extracts a self-contained chunk of text, a definition, a number, a step, a comparison row, and drops it into a generated response, often with a citation and often without one. AEO is the work of making your content easy to extract and worth citing when it is.

01

Different engines pull from different sources. ChatGPT leans heavily on Bing's index. Perplexity favors recent content and cites Reddit disproportionately. Google's AI Overviews pull mostly from pages that already rank well organically.

02

Structure matters more than length. A page that opens each section with a direct answer, then supports it with specifics, gets extracted more often than a page that builds up to the answer at the end.

03

Citation is not guaranteed even when you are the best source. Being extractable and being credible, backlinks, mentions, a consistent entity across the web, both have to be true.

How We Build It

How We Build AEO Into a Page

Step 01

Answer First, Every Section

Each heading gets a direct one or two sentence answer immediately underneath it, before any supporting detail. That paragraph is what a model lifts.

Step 02

Structured Data That Matches the Content

FAQPage, DefinedTerm and Article schema are wired to the actual questions and definitions on the page, not bolted on generically. Mismatched schema gets ignored or, worse, gets a page flagged as unreliable.

Step 03

One Consistent Entity Across Every Page

Every page on a site should describe the same organization the same way. A different name, description or set of facts on every page fragments the entity a model is trying to identify, and fragmented entities get cited less.

Step 04

Explicit Access for AI Crawlers

robots.txt and llms.txt are configured to allow the specific crawlers each engine uses, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, by name. A blocked crawler cannot cite a page it was never allowed to read.

What You Get

Deliverables

  • An audit of your current pages against AEO structure: answer-first paragraphs, schema coverage, entity consistency
  • A prioritized list of pages worth rebuilding first, ranked by citation potential
  • Corrected or added JSON-LD structured data across the pages that need it
  • A configured robots.txt and llms.txt that name AI crawlers explicitly
Qualification

Is This You?

Strong fit

  • You have already invested in SEO and want the same content working for AI answer surfaces too.
  • Buyers in your category are visibly starting research in ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of Google.
  • You can point to specific pages you want checked, not just a general sense that AI visibility matters.

Not a fit yet

  • You have no indexed content at all yet. AEO restructures existing pages, it does not replace writing them.
  • You want guaranteed citations. No agency can promise a specific model will cite a specific page. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something else.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is AEO the same thing as GEO?

The terms are used inconsistently across the industry. Most practitioners use AEO for the narrower, page-level work: structuring content to be extracted and cited by name. GEO, generative engine optimization, is often used for the broader strategy: brand authority, mentions across the web, and presence in the data models draw from. In practice the two overlap enough that most agencies, including us, use them close to interchangeably.

Can I measure AEO the way I measure SEO rankings?

Not with the same tools yet. There is no equivalent of a rank tracker that works reliably across every AI engine. What you can measure: whether your brand appears when you ask the major engines questions in your category, whether your pages show up as cited sources, and whether referral traffic from AI engines is growing in your analytics.

Does AEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Google AI Overviews and most other engines still draw heavily from content that already ranks well organically. Traditional SEO signals, backlinks, technical health, topical authority, remain the foundation. AEO adds a layer of structure on top of that foundation, it does not substitute for it.

How long does it take to see AI citations after making these changes?

It varies by engine. Perplexity tends to reflect structural changes within a few days to two weeks because it crawls and re-indexes frequently. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews typically lag longer, often four to eight weeks, tied to their underlying index refresh cycles.
