Revenue Attribution & Reporting
Attribution is not a dashboard you buy, it is a set of decisions about what counts as a touch, how credit is split, and what you will do differently depending on the answer. Made explicitly, it is useful. Made by a vendor's default settings, it is theatre.

Last-Touch Attribution Is Telling You to Cut the Wrong Channel.
In a B2B motion with a four-month cycle and six people on the buying committee, last-touch credits whichever channel happened to be nearest the form fill, usually branded search, which was going to convert anyway. Teams then defund the podcast, the community and the founder's posts that created the demand in the first place. The measurable channel gets the credit; the channel that did the work gets cut.
Most influence is unmeasurable by cookie. Slack groups, WhatsApp, podcasts and word of mouth generate real demand and leave no trackable trace.
Buying committees are modelled as single leads. Six people from one account researching independently look like six unrelated journeys to most tools.
The reporting cannot be reconciled with finance. Marketing's sourced-pipeline number and finance's revenue number use different bases, so neither survives a board meeting intact.
Attribution You Can Defend in a Board Meeting
Decide the Questions Before the Model
We start from the three or four decisions attribution is meant to inform: where the next marketing dollar goes, which motion to staff, what to cut. A model that answers those precisely is far more useful than one that reports everything and settles nothing, and it is much cheaper to build.
Build It Account-Centric in the Warehouse
Touches resolve to accounts rather than to individual leads, so a buying committee reads as one journey. Everything lands in your warehouse rather than inside a vendor's black box, which means you can audit the logic, change the model, and keep the history if you switch tools.
Instrument Self-Reported Attribution Properly
A single well-placed how did you hear about us field, cleaned and coded consistently, routinely outperforms multi-touch modelling for dark-social-heavy motions. We wire it into the form, normalise the free text, and reconcile it against the tracked data so you can see where they disagree.
Run Incrementality Where the Spend Justifies It
For channels with meaningful budget we design geo holdouts or time-based tests to measure what would have happened anyway. It is the only method that answers the causal question, and it consistently reorders the ranking that correlational attribution produces.
Deliverables
- A written decision brief defining exactly which questions the model must answer
- Account-centric multi-touch attribution built natively in your warehouse
- Cleaned, coded self-reported attribution reconciled against tracked touches
- An incrementality testing plan for your highest-spend channels
- Executive reporting reconciled to finance's revenue definitions
Is This You?
Strong fit
- You spend enough across channels that misallocation is materially expensive.
- You have a warehouse, or will stand one up, and can get CRM and ad platform data into it.
- Leadership is prepared to act on the answer, including cutting a channel someone is attached to.
Not a fit yet
- You run one channel. Attribution has nothing to arbitrate. Spend the money on the channel instead.
- You want a number that makes marketing look good. We will build the honest version or none at all.
What Would You Do Differently?
Come to the call with the decision you are trying to make. If we cannot name a specific action that changes based on the model's output, we will tell you not to build it. That conversation has saved teams six-figure tooling commitments.

Common Questions
Do we need a data warehouse for this?
For anything durable, yes. Attribution built inside an ad platform or a CRM dies when you change either one, and cannot express account-centric logic properly. A modest warehouse is inexpensive relative to what it protects, and it becomes the foundation for forecasting and retention work too.
Which attribution model should we use?
For most B2B teams, a W-shaped or account-based model as the default view, with self-reported attribution as a sanity check and incrementality tests for the largest channels. But the model matters less than consistency. A slightly wrong model applied consistently beats switching between three correct ones.
How do we measure channels we cannot track at all?
Self-reported attribution and incrementality testing, in that order of cost. Neither is perfect, and both beat pretending the channel does not exist because a pixel could not follow it. Reporting an honest range is better than a precise number that is wrong.
Can you work with our existing attribution tool?
Usually yes. Several of them are good at collection and weak at account resolution and reconciliation, which is where we add the layer. We only recommend replacing a tool when its model cannot express the logic your motion needs, and we would rather extend what you have.
