What an AI Search Visibility Audit Actually Checks

An AI search visibility audit checks four things: whether AI crawlers can access your pages at all, whether your structured data accurately describes what is on the page, whether your organization is described consistently everywhere it appears, and whether your content is structured for extraction. Most sites fail on at least two of the four.

The Gap

"We're Not Showing Up in ChatGPT" Is Not a Diagnosis

That complaint can mean four completely different problems, and they need different fixes. It could mean crawlers are blocked and nothing is even reachable. It could mean pages are reachable but written in a way models cannot cleanly extract. It could mean the organization is described inconsistently across the web, which fragments how confidently a model identifies you. Or it could mean you are simply not competitive yet in the underlying search rankings the engine draws from. A real audit separates these before recommending anything.

01

Crawler access is a binary yes or no, and it is the first thing to check, because nothing else on this list matters if GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are blocked in robots.txt.

02

Schema coverage needs to be checked for accuracy, not just presence. A page with FAQPage schema that does not match the visible Q&A content on the page can get a site flagged as unreliable rather than helped.

03

Entity consistency is invisible until you look for it. Different descriptions of your company across your own pages, your LinkedIn, your directory listings and your press mentions all describe a different, blurrier entity to a model trying to identify who you are.

How We Build It

How the Audit Runs

Step 01

Crawler Access Check

We pull your live robots.txt and check it against the full list of named AI crawlers: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Bingbot and meta-externalagent. Any blocked or missing crawler goes on the fix list first, since it is the highest-leverage change on the whole audit.

Step 02

Structured Data Review

Every page's JSON-LD is validated against the visible content, not just checked for the presence of tags. We flag schema that does not match what is on the page, since mismatched schema can hurt more than having none at all.

Step 03

Entity Consistency Check

We compare how your organization is described across your own site, your Google Business Profile, your major directory listings and any third-party mentions we can find, and flag the inconsistencies that make you harder for a model to identify confidently as a single, credible entity.

Step 04

Content Structure Scoring

Priority pages are scored against answer-first structure: does each section open with a direct answer, are comparisons in table form, are definitions clearly marked. This is where the 28 to 40% citation lift from clean structure is either being captured or left on the table.

What You Get

Deliverables

  • A crawler access report covering every major named AI crawler, with exact robots.txt fixes
  • A schema accuracy report flagging mismatched or missing JSON-LD by page
  • An entity consistency report comparing your organization's description across your owned and third-party surfaces
  • A content structure score for your priority pages with specific rewrite recommendations
  • A single prioritized fix list ranked by expected impact, not just by what is easiest to change
Qualification

Is This You?

Strong fit

  • You suspect something specific is blocking AI visibility but do not know if it is technical, structural or reputational.
  • You have a set of priority pages, product pages, comparison pages, definition pages, that you want checked before investing further in AI search.

Not a fit yet

  • You have a brand new site with almost no content or backlink history. An audit will mostly tell you what you already know: there is not much here yet.
  • You want a score with no explanation of what produces it. This audit hands you the specific checks and the specific fixes, not a single opaque number.
Next Step

Get the Specific Fix List, Not a Vague Score

Send us your priority pages and we will run the same checks the engines effectively run, then tell you exactly what is blocking visibility, in order of what matters most.

FAQ

Common Questions

How is this different from a regular SEO audit?

An SEO audit checks technical health, backlinks and keyword targeting aimed at ranking a page in a list of results. This audit adds checks that only matter for AI engines: whether crawlers with names like GPTBot and ClaudeBot are actually allowed in, whether your schema is accurate rather than just present, and whether your organization is described the same way everywhere. Some findings overlap. Several do not.

Can you audit visibility across all the AI engines at once, or just one?

We check crawler access and content structure across all the major engines at once, since the underlying fixes mostly overlap. Where the engines genuinely diverge, ChatGPT leaning on Bing rankings, Perplexity favoring recency and Reddit, Google AI Overviews pulling from already-ranking pages, we call that out explicitly rather than giving one blended recommendation.

Do you build the fixes, or just report them?

This audit is diagnostic: you get the specific findings and fixes, and you or your team can implement them. If you want the fixes actually built, schema written, llms.txt configured, robots.txt corrected, that is covered by our related implementation pages, and the audit findings feed directly into that work.

How do we know the audit worked?

Track three things after implementing the fixes: whether AI referral traffic shows up in your analytics, whether you appear when you ask the major engines category questions directly, and whether your priority pages get re-crawled, which Perplexity often reflects within 2 to 7 days. There is no single AI-equivalent of a rank tracker yet that works reliably across every engine.
