How to Get Cited by ChatGPT
ChatGPT draws the large majority of its web citations from Bing's top 10 organic results, with 87% overlap between the two. If you are not ranking on Bing for a query, you are very unlikely to be cited when someone asks ChatGPT that same question.

Most "ChatGPT SEO" Advice Ignores Where Citations Actually Come From
A lot of content published in 2025 and 2026 treats ChatGPT citations as a mystery to be reverse engineered from scratch. It is not. ChatGPT's browsing and citation behavior is built on Bing search results for most factual queries, so the fastest lever most sites ignore is simply ranking on Bing, not just Google. On top of that base, structure and schema decide whether a page that does rank actually gets pulled into the generated answer instead of just sitting in the source list.
Bing ranking is the gate, not an afterthought. A page invisible on Bing has a low ceiling for ChatGPT citations regardless of how well it is written, because ChatGPT is not crawling the open web from scratch for most queries.
Being indexable is not the same as being extractable. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot need to be explicitly allowed in robots.txt, and even then a page written as one long undifferentiated block gives the model nothing clean to lift into an answer.
Citation happens at the paragraph level, not the page level. ChatGPT quotes or paraphrases a specific chunk of text, so a page needs several self-contained, answer-first sections rather than one good paragraph buried on page three of the content.
What Actually Moves the Needle
Check Bing Indexing and Ranking First
Before touching content structure, we confirm the page is indexed on Bing and see where it ranks for the target query. If it is not ranking there, that is the priority fix, since it is the single strongest predictor of ChatGPT citation for most factual and comparison queries.
Confirm the Crawlers Are Actually Allowed In
GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot both need explicit allow rules in robots.txt. We have seen sites block these accidentally through an overly broad disallow rule written years before either crawler existed. This is a five-minute fix that a lot of sites never make.
Rewrite for Answer-First Structure
Each section gets a direct answer to its implied question in the first sentence or two, before supporting detail. Content organized this way is reported as 28 to 40% more likely to get cited, because the model can lift a self-contained block without having to reconstruct meaning from context around it.
Add Schema That Matches the Content
FAQPage schema for genuine Q&A sections, Article schema with author and organization data, and DefinedTerm markup for anything you are defining. This does not force a citation, but it gives the model unambiguous confirmation of what a passage is and who wrote it.
Deliverables
- A Bing indexing and ranking check for your target queries, since this is the base ChatGPT citations are built on
- A robots.txt review confirming GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are explicitly allowed
- Section-by-section rewrites of your priority pages to lead with a direct answer
- FAQPage, Article and DefinedTerm schema added where the content actually supports it
- A prioritized list ranking your existing pages by citation potential, so you know which ones to fix first
Is This You?
Strong fit
- You have indexed content already and want to know specifically why it is not showing up when you ask ChatGPT about your category.
- You have checked and your pages either are not ranking on Bing at all, or rank but never get quoted, and you want to know which problem you actually have.
Not a fit yet
- You have no published content yet. This is a restructuring exercise, not a content creation service; write the pages first.
- You want a guarantee that a specific query will cite you by name. No one can promise that, including us.
Find Out Which Problem You Actually Have
Not ranking on Bing and not being structured for extraction look identical from the outside. We will tell you which one is actually blocking you before you rewrite anything.

Common Questions
Does ChatGPT crawl my site directly, or does it rely on search results?
Both, depending on the query type. For most factual and how-to queries during a browsing session, ChatGPT leans on Bing's search index rather than crawling fresh. GPTBot is OpenAI's separate crawler used mainly for training data collection, and OAI-SearchBot is the one tied more directly to live search retrieval. Blocking either one narrows what ChatGPT can see and cite.
Why does a page that ranks well on Google never get cited by ChatGPT?
Because ChatGPT's citation behavior tracks Bing's rankings, not Google's, and the two search engines do not always agree on the same page. A page can be a top result on Google and rank poorly, or not be indexed at all, on Bing. Checking Bing directly, rather than assuming Google performance carries over, is the first diagnostic step.
How is this different from getting cited by Perplexity?
Different mechanism entirely. Perplexity crawls and re-indexes pages frequently, often reflecting a structural change within 2 to 7 days, and pulls heavily from Reddit, 46.7% of its citations come from there. ChatGPT is slower to reflect changes and much more tied to Bing's existing rankings. Optimizing for one does not automatically optimize for the other, though answer-first structure and clean schema help with both.
If we want ongoing AI visibility work rather than a one-time fix, do you offer that?
Yes. This page covers the diagnostic and structural work itself. If you want it run as an ongoing engagement, monitoring citations, catching regressions, expanding coverage as you publish, that is what our AEO and GEO service line covers rather than a one-off audit.
